After two Beowulf setups and numerous Red Hat and Fedora installations over the last ten years, I am feeling really stupid to have to ask this question.
I am trying to do an 'Upgrade' from Fedora 9 to Fedora 12 with the installation DVD included with the Wiley 'Fedora 2010 Edition ....Linux 12.
I have tried a number of times to get to a point where I can select "upgrade" however this choice is not presented to me at any point up to the partitioning choices (any of which would erase my existing Linux partitions). With "Install or upgrade" highlighted on the boot menu, I press Enter to begin the installation. From that point to the partitioning choices there is no screen that gives me a chance to Select either "Install Fedora for a new install OR, "Upgrade an existing installation". (page 38)
How do I navigate to the page where I can select "upgrade"?
Am I just missing something here (User malfunction)?
Is this perhaps a glitch in this particular DVD?
Is Fedora 9 just too old to upgrade?
Are my brain cells rotting away?
Again, so sorry have to ask this but I am completely baffled.
Thank you,
Jared R. Simmons
Firstly, it's a bit pointless installing F12 just as it becomes unsupported. You would be better off installing F14 now.
Secondly, when the first grub screen is presented, select to edit the kernel arguments and add the word upgradeany to the end of the arguments. Then you will be given the choice to upgrade.
But bear in mind that F12 uses ext4 as the default filesystem as does every version since, so upgrading F9 will leave you further behind than you expected for a long time to come.
it is 100% imposable to upgrade fedora 9 to 12
there were WAY to many changes
NOR would it be possible to upgrade fedora 9 to 14 EVEN MORE changes
ext4 as the default file system and /boot has changed SO much - the inode byte size and size ( it NEEDS to be 500meg to 1 gig in fedora 14 to use the "preupgrade" option .
your ONLY option is to install fedora 14 as a 100% clean fresh install after reformatting then in 6 months use "preupgrade" to upgrade to 15 ( 50%/50% chance it will work) a fresh install is still the best option .
I am only just now considering moving to an ext4 filesystem. But that will involve a reinstall with F14. Nothing is "required" - people are still free to do what they want.
Once again you are showing your anti Fedora bias John.
Jared, please try a fresh install of Fedora 14, or consider a slower-moving distro such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or CentOS (a free community "respin" of RHEL). RHEL 6 is similar to Fedora 12 in almost every way, except that it will be supported through 2020.

Hey, Smoker, John, and Snow Pipe, thanks much for your input - it is certainly time for me to move onwards and upwards. My wife and I lived 3 yrs in PI and due to a kidnap plot against our kids we had to literally run for our lives to get safely back to the USA. Other than daily use of Fedora 9 while in the PI, I have been really out of touch with all things Linux for all those three years. I will be looking seriously at Fedora 14 and the RHEL op sys. these upcoming weeks. Again, you guys have all been greatly helpful and I do appreciate. Hope you all have a happy holiday season. Jared
