FC6 install problems

i want to test FC6 before upgrading some family members' computers, but i'm having trouble with the install. i don't want to burn the CDs if possible -- just more plastic crap for the landfills -- but the hd and net installs are giving me grief. i have FC5 installed already, which i use for testing b4 doing anything on the other computers, so technically i guess it's an "upgrade" not an "install," if that makes any difference.

at the boot prompt i type "linux text askmethod" (text because FC seems to have a problem with my radeon, too ), and go to the hard drive install. the ISOs are on /dev/hda5 which is mounted at /mnt/data, and then the ISOs are in /mnt/data/torrents/Zod-binary-i386.

after choosing the device, you're supposed to enter the directory in the text box, excluding the mount point. so iow, after selecting /dev/hda5, the directory to add supposedly would be /torrents/Zod-etc. but when i do that i get an error message something like "there are no FC ISOs at /tmp/hdimage//torrents/Zod-etc." i've tried multiple entries for the directory, all fail with the same message.

i thought it might be because the partition is reiserfs, so i moved the ISOs to an ext3 partition on hdb. same thing: "Device /dev/hdb2 does not appear to contain FC images."

next, i moved them to my webserver, and tried an http install. i left automatic DHCP configuration, ipv4 and ipv6 selected (also tried without ipv6), and the install just hangs trying DHCP.

i configured it manually: entered the IP of my machine 192.168.0.202, the gateway is my router 192.168.0.1, and i tried both the router IP and opendns 208.67.222.222 as the nameserver. it gives me an error that i have to use a standard ipv4 or CIDR address. i thought the straight IP was the standard ipv4 address? i also tried with adding the netmask in the field after the address, e.g.:

address: 192.168.0.202 / 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1
nameserver: 208.67.222.222

but i just keep getting the same message about needing the correct ipv4 address.

can anyone tell me what i'm doing wrong? i thought maybe FC wasn't loading the network module (forcedeth), but i can't find any way to check it. when i alt+Fn to get to another console, there aren't any consoles, just __ blinking in the upper left corner, or else a console being used by the installer for something. i'd prefer to do an http install if possible, to make it easier to install on the other computers. but i'll take a HD install at this point, b/c i can just d/l the ISOs from my webserver onto the other computers.

No, I think that should be for you:

hda5 for the device (like you have) and
torrents/Zod-binary-i386

for the directory. (no leading / )

I did an askmethod install off my usb hard disk and it's device
was /dev/sdb1 and if I have linux up and looking in the device
/dev/sdb1 points to mount point /media/lacie250GB and the
DVD iso file I had was in /media/lacie250GB/isos/fc6
so I told askmethod to use isos/fc6
for the directory

NOTE NO leading "/"

Another thing, I didn't use the full blown FC6 install disk1,
I just downloaded the boot.iso for FC6 and used that
to run the askmethod to point to the DVD.iso on my
use hard disk.

Yes, reiser isn't ok for the askmethod, I still just think you're
accidentally pointing to the wrong partition or directory.

Another idea, boot the install disk and run rescue mode,
and have it chroot mount the disk in question where you put the
files on hdb . This way you can actually confirm that the
files are there, It think this might help because then you're
seeing the disks the way the installer would (ie if you boot
a full linux with reiser support, it's going to have slightly
different device mapping than the bare installer disk so it
could be you're getting the device names wrong)

<cut the http stuff, I have no idea about that since I've not tried it.>
