FC4 Kernel Panic IDE Not Syncing

Hello.

I just installed FC4, and at boot time I get the following kernel panic:

Kernel Panic not syncing: drives/ide/pci/piix.c:232: spin_lock(drivers/ide/ide.c:c03eb708) already locked by drivers/ide/ide-iops.c/1235. (not tainted)
BUG: soft lockup detected on CPU#0!

I am running on a GigaByte GA-6CX MoBo with a PIII in it. No RAID, booting from drive connected to onboard IDE.

Any Ideas?

can you show the output of everything up to that point?

looks like two conflicting ide drivers are trying to run the same drive

Please forgive my ignorance, but I don't know how. How would I capture that output?

not sure there is a way to capture it
what is the line or two above it

I was getting the same message, but during the installation...
What I did was to burn again only the first CD... AND wrote in the text installation mode "linux ide=nodma".

Maybe it will help you.

Good luck!

The ide=nodma option took care of it. Thanks!

Had same issue w/two HDs

I ran into the same kernel panic as reported earlier, while installing FC4 onto a x86 box with a quartet of IDE devices. Two of these were hard disks, one a 4Gb unit and the other 20GB.

Using ide=nodma option solved my problem too.

Same here. ide=nodma worked for my FC4 install. Thanks!
