fc4 install problem

Have an old machine that I am trying to install FC4 on to get my start in Linux. It is dell 333gHz box with 384 Mb ram. I am using a Mac to dnl the iso's by ftp from one of the mirror sites, and burning the image to cd (yes, burning the image).

My mac won't do the sha1sum. I tried dnl Jacksum, but couldn't figure out the command line to get it to work on my Mac, so I can't verify the iso's.

I've dnl the iso's three times, and get to varying parts of the boot process. It usually craps out loading vmlinuz, but once I actually got to start loading anaconda. If I boot from the disc again, it says sorry, there's a checksum error.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanx,

Mine installed nicely, despite the chksum error it gave me after burning my ISOs(who's sha1sum was intact when they were downloaded.) As I rebooted for the first boot, I was facing a PBR error (PBR probably stands for Partition Boot Record). I went back and installed Good old slackware 10.1, and again, have had no problems doing that. I suggest you do the same. Or try some older FC distro, (your machine taken in consideration). Slack will on the other hand run smoother and faster on a slow machine, with plenty of RAM (as you have)

Thanks for your prompt reply. I took your advice and dnl slackware 10.1. I had the same problems on install as above. I did furthur research (deeper search with better terms) and found that there is indeed a way to do md5 and sha1sum on mac os X. All iso's checked with their respective numbers.

So I figure now that the problem must lie in either the cd burner on my mac, the cd-r media, or the reader on the old dell box. The burner/reader on the dell is one of the last yamaha cd devices before they discontinued. If anyone has anything to add it would be much appreciated.

mac users beware!

After determining the iso's were ok, i burned them as iso's and took them to my wife's windoze box. After burning from the iso's, my old computer appears to be happily installing FC4.

So, what I figure is that there is something about burning i386 iso's on OS X.

Oh, well, maybe things will be better for OS X users when apple goes to intel processors.

Talking up and running

Install worked!

Now for learning and I'm sure more troubleshooting.
