Will Boot Camp Assistant itself (I have not used it, so my iMac is currently running only OSX) cause any problems, or should I be able to follow the procedure in the linked document?

If you'd like to dual-boot your system, then following the how-to guides is the way you can do it. Not sure why you ask, since you've obviously looked up how to dual-boot your mac, and have found the official instructions for doing so.
ANY procedure can damage your system if you don't do it right...if you're looking for 100% safety, then don't do it.
