Common Problems in Fedora Core 2?

Hi,

anybody encounter this problem...

If you wanna do a GUI installation,
you need to do a media test on CD1 at least.

If you didn't do this and go straight into installation,
the GUI installation will not be able to kick off.

I am experiencing this. Did a md5sum on all disks

I had tht problem with test2 but not final. I skipped the media test in final with no problems installing it using the GUI. Test 2 had that as a bug tho where you had to test atleast one CD before continueing installation.

I see...
what about "kernel panic..."?
I received this warning and FC2 stopped rebooting after installation.

Any ideas?

I ran into that error before using knoppix/debian on a HDD partion with FC2 on the main partion. After I installed it to the HDD I had a problem with the Grub pointing to the right partion for knoppix.

All I did was edit the grub file for the kernel to point the root=LABEL=\ to point to the partion name. ie. root=LABEL=/knoppix (the way I named it was with the / and knoppix in qtparted).

It worked and booted.

As its in VM I can't find or figure out why cause of this, VM should report the root (hda 0,0) as the root of your VM "HDD" and as long as root=LABEL=/ is the label of the root partion for FC2 it should be fine .

Have you tried VirtualPC? Might be a VM related bug with Fedora. This isn't an isolated problem if you search the Fedora forum for vmware there are plenty of these questions with no answers.

K This is a quick update. First of your KErnel options are fine as is. I was on the wrong path mainly because I believed your initrd was fine. but it seems that the ramdisk isn't loading. Why? I'll find out but I don't have a windwos box to run vmware and install fedora to. play with .

I'll get back to you on this today.

K been a headache and a half for the past 2 days. Well I learned more about GRUB in the last 2 days then I thought possible. Thanks to you because I'm studing for the LPI and grub is a section for it. But back to buisness.

K try passing the filesystem type to the kernel

kernel --type=ext3 /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet

To do this at the GRUB splash screen highlight the enry you want to use then press 'e'
it will then display the lines the GRUB uses to boot to the OS you choose. (basically it will show the lines under title for the one you choose).
Then go down to the kerenel line and press 'e' again (use the down arrow to get there).
it will then let you edit that line, using the arrow keys agin go to just after the kernel and add the type.

ext3 is the the filesystem Fedora formats the partion as.

Sorry it took me 2 days to figure this out. Tried to get back to you yesterday but I was really busy.

hey gufymike no worries.
its me who need to say thanks.

Initially i thought this might be a vmware prob/bug...
but I got over vmware forum and saw that some are able to run FC2.

BTW, I use the kernel parameter u said and got "invalid argument"
I thought by default the fs installed is ext3.... funny.

Anyway i took away the type parameter... i got "file not found"
The vmlinuz-2.6.5-1.358 doesn't seem to reside in /boot path

Maybe i should try downloading the whole FC2 again.
I did do md5sum that time b4 i burnt into CDs...

thank you

And no I don't think you need to. If you did the md5 it should install correctly.

btw when adding --type did you add it like -type or - - type (its two hyphens together sorry didn't clarify that)

i'll keep looking and thinking about it.
