use a boot disk or interactive boot (no idea if you can do this as you've not given nearly enough information, like what distro you are running etc....) and then remove the command to start that particular service. if you're on redhat / mandrake there are many fancy ways to do it, but as the base level, delete /etc/init.d/rc5.d/S80Firewire or whatever it's actually called on your system.
