blue screen no login

Hello

I have a problem that has been driving me nuts. After red hat died I switched to fedora. Everything was going great. I installed some rpms from my fedora disk and my machine crashed. When I rebooted it. I just get a blue screen with an hourglass and no login screen. I still have full access to the machine remotely ie webin and ssh but cannot gain access tyo my desktop. The last logs look like this:

Jun 8 17:31:41 hercules gdm(pam_unix)[1960]: bad username []

This what is in my /etc/passwd file

gdm:x:42:42::/var/gdm:/sbin/nologin

This is what is in my /etc/group file

I use kde. If I cannot find an easy fix is there any way to remove all the kde and gnome and xwindows files and reinstall them with the correct depenancys from the command line. I really do not want to reload this server.

I hope this enough information.

Thanks

D.

I'm having the same problem- reported it to redhat via bugzilla a few weeks ago and haven't gotten a response. Just wanted to be added to the thread in case someone figures out the problem.

I ended up just doing a fresh install after backing up the stuff I needed.
I think the problem was that up2date was finding all the test releases and I was installing them. If you're doing the same, I suggest editing /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources to only get stable packages. Here are the only lines not commented out in mine now (the last 2 lines are for the livna servers so I can update mplayer, xmms-mp3, etc (the stuff that doesn't ship with Fedora due to licensing, etc):

yum fedora-core-2 http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu.../linux/core/2/$ARCH/os/
yum updates-released-fc2 http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...ore/updates/2/$ARCH/

yum-mirror fedora-core-2 http://fedora.redhat.com/download/up.../fedora-core-2
yum-mirror updates-released-fc2 http://fedora.redhat.com/download/up...s-released-fc2

yum livna-stable http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/2/i386/yum/stable/
yum fedora-us-stable-fc1 http://download.fedora.us/fedora/fed.../RPMS.updates/

I managed to get round this problem by removing (well moving to a temp location) all the gdm files in usr/bin

I booted into linux rescue mode using install disks then moved /usr/bin/gdm* to a backup folder

Next time I booted I gog a very generic logon screen but it all worked. I also get new options when logging out of KDE (i used to get logout / cancel..... now I get the little dragon picture and more options)
