Anaconda doesn't recognize the CDROM in FC2 install
 

Can't get to the "disc found" stage. Can anyone help?

Tell us a bit more to focus the question........ is your CDRom mounted? Stupid question perhaps. Is it the first installation disk?

Well, I'm trying to install FC2 on a system that is one of those standard small-RAM cheapist business systems that someone gave me, so 64 RAM, small system board form factor, etc.

With regard to the CDROM being mounted, there is currently Windows 98 on the system. I was planning on deleting the current OS with Disk Druid during install. The weird thing to me (and I'm a newb) is that the system recognized the CD in the drive to boot, but not to get to the CD found box from the previous (language?) box.

Maybe I said the wrong thing before. The system is recognizing the CD Rom drive. It's not recognizing the disc in the drive.

Did you go to your BIOS and change it to boot from the CDROM?

Isn't it booting from CDROM when it goes to the root: prompt?

After you have prepared a partition with Partition Magic or other partitioning software DeFrag the drive ( perhaps before and after you create the new partition) This will be a tricky instal if you only have Windows 98 and my knowledge - why not back up all your data you want to keep first, blow Windows 98 away and Fdisk the drive to create two equal partitions. Then reload Windows 98 and Fedora 3 on the second partition. You must get the Windows system to boot the FC3 disk 1 from a re-boot so F2 or Delete key to get into BIOS and change the boot order to boot from CDROM - put your Linux disk in the drive and follow the prompts - it's a piece of cake!

I don't want to keep Windows at all. I want to wipe it out. It's my second computer and its gimped anyway I can't blow it up or whatever.

I think it's already booting from CDROM its just that once Anaconda is about to go to the step that says CD Found is when its not finding the CD. It's finding the CD at first, i.e. when it boots.

Also, its FC2.

How do I get to BIOS from the Windows 98 OS w/o rebooting because I can't seem to get to BIOS during boot as per usual method.

Does the machine respond to a cold boot with a Windows boot disk and go to an 'A´ prompt? ( I think we better do this with ICQ?)

I know this is a really dumb question but how do I make a boot disc.

Windows 98 will make a boot disk - doubleclick My Computer on desktop>Control Panel>Add remove Programs> and you may see a tab "Startup Disk" if you have a formatted floppy go from there. If your really stuck go to the local computer shop and ask for a Windows 98 boot disk? Unless of course you in the back of beyond in Siberia! :D

OK. It's a while since I've done this, so anybody watching correct me if there is a better way!

At the 'A' prompt type "FDISK¨ I don' t like FDisk - a better option for me is PDISK. Download a copy of PDISK? It is only 8KB.
( I can E-Mail you a copy if necessary)

Delete all existing partions, then shut down. Restart, and get into the 'A' login - FORMAT the drive. FDISK /mbr. That should clear your Master Boot Record of any old Bootloader, I think. Shutdown and change your BIOS setting on the reboot to boot from the CDROM drive first.

Put your FC2 first disk in the drive, it will load, and just follow the prompts.

It may be an option for you to reload Windows98 on a first partition, that is create 2 partitions with PDisk, and have a dual boot system - I have Windows software I still use - I have not found accounting software I like as much in Linux but it is just a matter of time!

Try this for a start, and others will fill you in on the procedure better than I for sure!
