yumex vs. synaptic
Hi,
I have this question for sometime now. I have both Ubuntu and Fedora on my box and when it comes to a GUI for updating the system, synaptic in Ubuntu is the one. It is fast and very smart. Synaptic tells about the dependencies needed by a package you want to download (yumex does the same) but it also tells you that these dependencies are no longer needed when you remove the package that needed them! It also gives one the possibility to either remove or completely remove (i.e. with all config files associated with the package to be removed). When it comes to yumex (and I think yum is easier and more informative than apt-get) I can see it takes forever to list the available packages. It lacks the power to scan the packages and tells you which of the libraries you have on your box are no longer needed. And it also does not give the option to completely remove a package (as far as I know, and I haven't checked it lately) So, if one want to have an as effective a GUI as synaptic, but for Fedora, what should one do? I contacted yumex people before but no one emailed me back. Thanks |
learn yum.
other pkg managers on Fedora are also not up to the mark. |
The "yum" basics are SO easy to learn that you will find that you ( by mistake) try to use them on non yum systems
Learn to use the terminal on fedora Code:

Thank you both for your replies.
@John_VV: I already have aliased "sudo apt-get" in Ubuntu to "yum" because I kept typing yum all the time! I do know yum well, all I want, is a GUI for Fedora as efficient as synaptic. Thank you again ~faizlo |

Fedora's Gnome spin ships with PackageKit. But in all honesty, learning yum via the terminal is the easiest in the long run.

I use yumex.
