yum update without network? (from cd/dvd)

Hello all!

I'm install Linux (FC4) for a buddy at his place tonight, and he is only on a dialup connection.

Is there a way I can download all of the yum packages and burn them to a DVD, then run yum on his new install with the DVD? Obviously, I'd still like yum to manage all dependencies, even if it has to connect out to download headers and such, but downloading 100's of megs or even several gigs on his dialup line is not a workable solution... especially when I have 135 mbit bandwidth at work =)

Thanks!

There is a yum option 'localinstall'. The yum man pages could tell you the syntax for it...

feeling silly...

I found the "localupdate" command, after you told me to (and I realized I should have) RTFM =)

Thank you!

Now I just need to figure out how to get back all of the packages I removed from my local cache - d'oh!

I did a
cp /var/cache/yum/*/packages/*.rpm /somedir
and put all of that on a cd
then on the other system, mounted the cd, browsed in to it and ran
rpm -Ivh *.rpm

it took a while, but now the 2 systems are identical (from th update point of view)

I just installed FC9 on my home PC which only has a dialup internet. I tried a yum update and it informed me more than 600MB to be downloaded.

I have FC8 running on my office PC which has fast internet connection. I would like to download all the FC9 updates from my office computer and put it on a DVD and then use this DVD to update the FC9 at home. How do I do this? I do not have much linux experience.

thanks in advance.

john
