YUM Update crash

I have a machine running Fedora 19 which has been offline for several months. I need to do some work on it involving installing new software, so I put the machine online and ran YUM (using YUMEX) to apply updates.

After a while, Yumex froze. It claims to be "Running RPM Transaction", "Updating dracut-029-1.fc18.2.x86_64"

I can see that it has recently reported "cannot create regular file '/var/tmp/abrt/ccpp-2013-01-30-12:40:23-8123/count': No such file or directory" and a couple more similar messages. The most recent messages are hidden by the "Processing pending actions" dialog window.

What can I safely do with the system to recover it?

Update.

While I was not watching closely, the "transaction completed" and Yumex asked if I wanted to exit the Yum Extender. However, it won't take "No" for an answer. Neither will it take "Yes". So the system is still frozen, but in a different place.

Eventually, screensave kicked in and wouldn't wake up so I had no choice but to power off. On re-booting, the system had survived. So, not so much 'solved' as 'gone away'.
