LinuxQuestions.org - Yum Erase Nouveau

Here is what I would like to do. The machines I will be working on are 800 miles away in a research lab. All are running f17 with Nvidia graphics cards. These machines have been upgraded to f17 from f10. I want to get rid of nouveau. Would these steps work.

1. init 3
2. yum erase xorg-x11-drv-nouveau
3. yum install xorg-x11-drv-nv
4. init 5 (or reboot)

The above simple logical process, along with a corresponding simple change in xorg.conf would do the trick using f10 in not much more time than it took to type to this point. Reading various posts here and elsewhere it appears that f17 has added unnecessary complexity.

I read about blacklisting nouveau but in my mind there is no better and less complicated blacklist than the one provided by yum erase nouveau. I don't want to deal with that driver or its problems and constant stream of messages to the the system log. I have better uses for my time than dealing with experimental software.

My goal is a fully functioning graphics workstation. The next phase will be installing either kmod or the Nvidia proprietary drives. These particular machines are used with 3D molecular modeling software and we need fully functioning Nvida cards. After reading about the nightmares people experience installing either the kmod or Nvidia drivers is why I want to get there in small steps The first as I stated is get the systems working without nouveau issues. The second install the fully functional drivers and tackle setting up xorg.conf, another once simple process (apps gone wild).
