Yum

I kind of know what it does, and I have read the 'man yum', but what is it? How does it work? What files do I need to get before I can use it to update/install somehting?

YUM (or the Yellow dog Updater, Modified) is an app that helps you to locate available packages in the software repositories you have configured and sort as updates or new availables (ones that you don't have installed yet. It will download the package for you and install it along with any dependencies it needs provided these can vbe found n the repo(s) that are configured and activated.

read www.fedorafaq.org to learn how to set up yum

An added bonus to having it install the programs and it's dependencies is that it can remove said packages as well, giving you something ALOT better than windows add/remove and 10 million billion times better than Fedora add/remove (god it sucks).

If you like GUI goodness then you can get yumex, a GUI for it although i find yum faster to run (and you can schedule updates with cron etc.

Front-ends are always slower. The problem is that most users are not fast enough to beat them
