Xwin from Windows XP to Fedora Core 5

Hi,

I just installed Fedora Core 5 on my computer, everything is running fine.

The problem comes when I setup xdm and gdm so that I can use X-WIN to access Fedora Core 5 from Windows XP. Everything runs very very slow, it is much slower than the connection that I have to another system running Fedora Core 2.

I believe this is caused by Fedora Core 5's look and feel. Is there anyway to optimise the speed. Please help.

Regards,
Sufiah Huang

What X server are you using on Windows to connect? I use Cygwin/X on Windows XP to connect to FC5 and it runs at a perfectly acceptable speed, even over 11Mbps wireless (rather than 100Mbps ethernet).

Hi chdgee,

I'm running X-WIN32.
I have 2 Linux systems, one is FC2 and another one is FC5. The speed is much faster when I Xwin to FC2. I checked the network activities, everytime I put in username and password, it sent at least 2 MB of traffic.

How did you configure your FC5 to enable XWIN access?

Through one of the gnome control centre applets, I can't remember its name off the top of my head, but it's in there with logon options and that sort of thing. There's a tab for XDMCP and to configure what the remote greeter looks like (face browser/plain/same as local etc). I can check when I go home tonight if you want the exact details.

Yes, please. Thank you cdhgee.

I'm looking for newer version of XWIN 32 or Cygwin/X now.

From gnome, go to the Desktop Menu, choose Administration and select Login Screen. Alternatively, Press Alt-F2 and type in gdmsetup. This will launch the applet and prompt you for the root password.

Click the "Remote" tab. Change style to anything other than "Remote login disabled" to enable XDMCP. I use plain as it's the least graphics-intensive.

HTH.
