Exclamation Xserver has only failsafe terminal on FC2 gnome and KDE gone

Hi I´m experiencing some difficulties with my Xserver.

I was trying to install some players and stuff with yum and synaptic until I got a message saying that some gnome panel had stopped operating. then I restarted the computer and when it had restarted the login was weird it wasn´t the smooth blue colored login as used to be there it was a white box saying "X Window System"and when I log in I only get the failsafe terminal.
If I turn off the x window system and try "system-config-display" then I get the response "command not found" so I´m getting out of my options here.

Should I reinstall gnome or something and if so what would be the best way to do so.
please be as specific as you can I´m still A

It´s getting exciting

OK this is getting more fun.

I tried upgrading my system to fedora core 3 and the installation halts on:
Error installing package
There was an error installing xorg-x11-6.8.1-12. This can indicate media failure, lack of disk space, and/or hardware problems. This is a fatal error and your install will be aborted.
Please verify your media and try again.
Press OK to reboot your system

I checked the disk space and it is 5940 MB I don´t think that should be a problem here if anyone does please tell me!
OK I´m doing a network installation so how do I check the media I have tried to different servers and I get the same results.
If it is a hardware problem what hardware would it be my video card is nvidea FX 5200 chip set and it is pretty new.

The computer is pretty much as it was before I get to the login it is a graphical login but not as smooth looking and I can only log in to failsafe terminal (it doesn´t even ask or have any options for gnome or kde)
So the problem is pretty much the same as before but now the system says it is fedora core

Thanks in advance

OK the problem has been resolved by installing fedora core 3 with a fresh install
I think I know why the installation failed previously: I think that it is because a few months ago my xserver stopped working completly and to get it working again I compiled new one from source not by installing a rpm package and therefor the xserver would become broken with a system upgrade. Could this have been the problem, it would be nice know if someone agrees with me well and I would also wan to know if someone disagrees and why.

Thanks in advance.
