Xorg problem: DRI will not load (and so poor 3D rendering)

Hi

after a bit of research, I finally worked out why I am getting only about 450fps or so with the opensource radeon driver (as tested with glxgears: recently it's dropped as low as 380fps) with my radeon xpress 200M card on FC5 x86_64, after visiting these pages:
http://www.linuxpackages.net/forum/v...3b7cce6f9973a6
http://www.computing.net/linux/wwwbo...rum/29200.html

I have discovered (from /var/log/Xorg.0.log) errors like this:
Quote:
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card254
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
(EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed to open the DRM
[dri] Disabling DRI.

(II) RADEON(0): Detected total video RAM=31744K, accessible=131072K (PCI BAR=131072K)
Why is DRI not being loaded and enabled? How can I fix this and so boost fps for my graphic card?

Thanks
(N.B. I have *repeatedly tried* the proprietary ATI driver, it did not work).

Here is my xorg.conf too:

As I understand it, the only way to get any 3D acceleration at all with GeForce and Radeon cards is to use the proprietary drivers. If they don't work, you're out of luck.

No... there are open source radeon drivers for ATI graphics cards (though not for NVidia), and these are the ones I have working at the moment, just not very well, because of the problems above. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been getting any 3D rendering / OpenGL at all...

Any one help?
