Xmms mp3s -- few problemos
After some trouble with changing some plugin info to get mp3s playing, it's now working, but I'm still having a few problemos.
To get the mp3 working on Fedora it was recommended that I: Quote:
Nevertheless, I used apt-get to get xmms-mp3; installed fine. MP3s are now working, but xmms is a little odd with things. For example, after stopping a song, it plays on for about 3/4 seconds. I wouldn't mind that too much, but when I click "next", the two songs overlap, and it just sounds ugly. I'm thinking this might be because the "MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player" isn't selected. And, I can't enable it, since it doesn't exist there under Options > Preferences. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :) |
Just in case anyone encounters this problem in the future... all I really had to do is change the output plugin to ALSA; and now it works fine.

MP3 support ... well I enabled MP3 support in KDE that came with FC2.
Look at this link.... http://www.holovaty.com/linux/fedorafaq/kde_mp3.html If you installed everything from the FC2 CDs... then u need lame lame-devel taglib and taglib-devel to be installed... then u just follow wht is given in the link...... regarding the mp3 support ... download look for "xmms mpg123 rpm" on www.google.com/linux and I hope you will find one.... While using KDE, set the output of xmms to arts.. and that of arts to alsa... and also remove the AUTOSUSPEND arts check box. regards unpredictable |
Forget those clunky MP3's! Go with Ogg format! OSS all the way baby! XMMS, MPlayer, and Xine all play this file great with no configuration. Ogg format also takes up less space for the same CD quality as MP3's.
Check out Ogg here: http://www.vorbis.com/ Release yourself from MP3-dom! |
Thats really great.......
But well... the most popular format is MP3 and you gotta get your Linux to play all those formats...even if they are Microsoft's propriority(dunno spelling :() formats... And so... i think instead of dicouraging mp3 we should try to make it work..... thats why i m a strong supporter of all software like OpenOffice.org, Wine, etc.... which help us use all "FOREIGN" formats of DATA. regards unpredictable |
For Fedora Core 1 go to http://yarrow.freshrpms.net
For Fedora Core 2 go to http://tettnang.freshrpms.net The XMMS RPM packages here are already MP3 enabled. Just download the RPM and install. |
And once more, those mp3 add-on packages for Fedora Core exist at http://rpm.livna.org
gstreamer-plugins-mp3 k3b-mp3 xmms-mp3 and others. Also take a look at http://fedorafaq.org and http://fedoratracker.org |
