Xen usage ideas

Hey guys I have xen on both my laptop and my server. Both in which I am having issues with networking... But thats not what this thread is for... I can understand using xen to run windows or something like that but I can't see why you would want to run different flavors of linux. Sure you can have a different server per machine but is that really worth it? Any way I was thinking of making a xen machine to start on my computers to either act as a honeypot or maybe a more reinforced gateway to the internet... Are either of these decent? And what would / or are you using xen for? Thanks,

nomb

PS - if anyone is good with xen and wants to help me fix mine please let me know.

Be careful about making a honey pot because you don't want that machine in your network. Put it out on the DMZ in front of the router, or on a different subnet. If it's on the same network and can communicate with your LAN, then you're only inviting them in!

I don't use Xen, but I can see interesting uses for it for testing out other Linux distros or testing your current distro without hosing your real system. You know, create a virtual network and all that.

Can you really run windows on linux with the free version of Xen?
I don't understand what the people at xen want to do. Anyway, who would run windows nowadays

Virtualization is good for hosting companies, they can provide you a root account. In such machines, there are sometimes 20 root, each on different OS.
Its good also for security: you could put the ftp server in 1 instance, the http server in another, the ssh in another,...

A bit of reading for the honeypot:

Right that makes sense. But would it work if I move my server out of the DMZ zone, then put the IP Address to the virtual interface in the DMZ zone. Since the virtual machine will be in a file, anything they do wont affect my server. Or do I just not get it...

Do not think that virtualisation is 100% secure.
Even if _almost_ impossible, it happened that some virtualisation software got detected and the host machine got compromised.

I will admit I tried to get XP going and I got throught the first blue screen where it copies the files over, then it restarts into the actualy setup. However when mine restarts it doesn't come back, and if I manually restart it, I get just a black screen... But I have seen people run windows with the free xen as long as you can do full virtualization.

Like I said before I can't even get my machines networked... I tried adamantix and I got it installed fine, however on my laptop I am using a wifi connection and if I switch the conf file from eth0 to wlan0 my wifi can't connect and xen also kills my eth0 on my laptop and server so when I try to ifup it says device not found... So ya thats about as far as I got to play with it.

hi,
virtualiztion mainly used for cost savings, if i am right and as a developer u can try networking, clustering etc all these things in a single pc

i am running fc6 and it asks me the installation media to be an nfs share.
1)Is it possible to install from cds or iso images?
2)Also i heard that the format of the installation media must be in the form supported by anaconda,is it true?
3)anyone tried debian, bsd or solaris?what are the results?

thanks for any response

i tried Windows virtual server 2005 r2 by installing debian on it.it works fine.
regards,
Nirmal Tom

You might want to delete one of your posts since they are redundant, but to answer your questions:

1) With xen you can install from cd or iso with no problem.

2) If I'm understanding correctly then no.

3) A lot of people who run xen seem to run of debian with great success. Not sure about the other two.

For Solaris, its very realistic : it's as slow as a real one
I've played a bit for a few days with solaris.
