X won't come up. No space on HDD

I was using FC3 and recently compiled the kernel source and wanted to install from the source. However, even with the old installation the X won't come up. This is because there is no more space left on my 20Gb HDD. Is there any way that I can get the terminal/console instead of X so that I can delete or archive some file to free some space.

All help is appreciated.

Hi Simon,

Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 brought the console and now I am compiling the new kernel again. Of course, I cleaned up a lot of stuff. Thanks for your quick & helpful reply.
