What happens? Doesn't restart doesn't tell much? Do you see a command line or a big black nothing?

What is your default runlevel? Do you login through the text or graphical interface?

Do you start X with startx? or is it started automatically at boot?

When it drops you to command line, can you do anything in the command line or does it hang?

I believe the default run level is 5. I had changed it to 3 so I could install some nvidia drivers. Once I changed it back to 5 this problem started happening. On boot it boots directly to X. When I go to log out say, to log in as root it just exits X and kicks me back to the command line, but I'm still logged in. I can start X again by doing startx, but ideally I want it back the way it was before by actually logging me out and restarting X.

i have the same problem kinda.. while im not that new to nix, im still a newbee =), i still have those little eager questions.. i installed the nvidia driver and all, did the change to the run level, edited the xorg.cfg. when i want to change the desktop size it gives me this message

Display settings changed

You need to log out and restart the X server for the changes to take effect.
Configuration was written to /etc/X11/XF86Config, original configuration saved as /etc/X11/XF86Config.backup.
how in god's good name do i reslove this problem
i've followed everything to a "T" i belive.. as always any help is welcome. ty in advanced

Have you tried logging out and logging in to see if your resolution changes?

Check your /etc/inittab file for a line like this:

x:5:respawn:etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

You want to make sure that this line has the respawn, otherwise your display manager will start on system boot, but will not restart once it is killed.

If this line is correct, do a "ps aux" and see if your display manager (probably gdm) or X is still running after you have logged out.
