X locking up due to video drivers?

have a Biostar iDeq 200n and just installing fedora core 3 I had to use text mode cause X had wierd lines and would freeze up on me using the GUI install. I got it up and running (barely) and yum update restarted then updated my video drivers (from livna repo) for the kernel I just upgraded to (2.6.10-1.741_FC3) and restarted. X came back up all trashed again missing lines are just plain trashed display and local console would lock up... but I could still access it via SSH. I have put in another (ATI) AGP card and it ran fine but after taking it out and going back with the on board nvidia card back to same problems (no suprise).

Anyone have any experience with this box and linux?

Thanks in advance,
Bogus8
