Wow..it crashed :p
well, I finally managed to bring linux to it's knees :o
I was happily surfing, got a phone call and just as the screen saver kicked in I moved the mouse and everything froze. I could still ctrl-alt-f1 to a CLI but being the newb that I am I wasn't sure what to do so after a little poking around I did su and rebooted :( What should I do if it happens again to shut down X (i did delete the /tmp/X0.lock file) but after that I was lost? Thanks all :jawa: mark |
Since the system was still responsive, you could kill the X-server with a [ctrl]+[alt]+[backspace]. If you were in runlevel 5 (boot straight to X), it would respawn and bring you back to the GUI login. If you were in runlevel 3 (boot to terminal), you could then restart X with "startx".
If that didn't work, but you could get to a terminal as you did, you could login, then use ps to find the running login and kill it. |
Thanks ranger_nemo (as I smash my head against the wall ) I knew there was a more elegant way than rebooting.
The ps tip is also much appreciated :) thanks again, mark |
Hi, not realy bringing Linux to ist knees is it, If windoze froze could you drop down to a dos box in any way and bring the gui back up?, its more like killing X, and even then it was still running. :)
