I am trying to use the new kernel driver b43 but am having a confusing issue. i blacklisted the old bcm43xx.

I then modprobe b43.

then i try to do ifconfig wlan0 up.
I get the error SIOCSIFFLAGS: No such file or directory

So I go hmm... interesting. My output of /var/log/messages shows this:
Sep 11 18:03:58 m1astray firmware_helper[2935]: Loading of /lib/firmware/bcm43xx_microcode5.fw for b43 driver failed: No such file or directory
Sep 11 18:04:38 m1astray firmware_helper[2939]: Loading of /lib/firmware/bcm43xx_microcode5.fw for b43 driver failed: No such file or directory
Sep 11 18:04:38 m1astray kernel: b43-phy0 ERROR: Microcode "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not available or load failed.
Sep 11 18:04:38 m1astray kernel: b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to and download the correct firmware (version 4)

Now when i use b43-fwcutter to get the latest firmware it doesn't produce that file. Instead it produces things like ucode5.fw and such. and bcm43xx_microcode5.fw looks like thats the old firmware.

Can anyone tell me why its looking for that firmware file instead of the ones provided my b43-fwcutter or what i can do to fix this?

Did you try with bcm43xx and it's fwcutter? I haven't heard about this b43 (what is it, anyway?), so unless you figure out something else, you could try the bcm43xx solution also in your spare time..or if this fwcuttering makes life hard, there's also ndiswrapper which may work.

Broadcom gives your life a meaning - you will have "something" to do
