Why needs the Upgrade to 17 a huge amount of data?

I originally installed 16 which had a size which should fit on a CD. I did not add much if at all (I'm still evaluating fedora since I use open SuSE regularly).

Then I wanted to upgrade and ran the "yum update" and "preupgrade" commands as recommended in the documentation. "yum update" downloaded about 800 MB and "preupgrade" about 2.2 GB. What the heck is this and why? I mean a fresh installation would have been faster and cheaper then?!? Can anybody explain why this huge amount of data is downloaded?

Hi,

that is only about 3 GB. How much space was used by your F16 installation? Did you not install other packages after your initial F16 install?

Only 3 GB? I use a mobile connection in the countryside...

I just had a look it is about 8 GB . Where did that come from? And no, i did not install anything except "preupdate" which is about 170 kB.

By "only about 3 GB" I meant that 3 GB would normally be considered small compared to the size of the full OS.

Well, you must have downloaded/installed that stuff at some point.

In the future, prior to an upgrade uninstall packages that you don't actually use, so they won't be upgraded, meaning there would be less to download...

I don't have the .iso file I used at hand right now, but as I wrote, the original installation was about CD-sized. No idea where this comes from.

Btw. I just re-started a preupgrade run. It has already downloaded about 300 MB without coming to the point where it downloads the rest of the still missing packets.

In these circumstances preupgrade is unusable for me, I'll download a fresh install CD (685 MB only!).

Remember that the CD install iso doesn't include things like Wine, LibreOffice etc.

Yes, but I can choose what to install and don't get a chunk of files of size 8 GB (I still wonder where that came from). In the meantime I installed 17 from CD and will build it up later. If you are interested, here is my primary concern / problem with its graphics ;): http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-a-4175419766/
