Why Fedora

I have been using Solaris and Slackware now for about 8 years. I recently installed fedora a couple of days ago and this is what I think. This distrobution is garbage. Slow, bloated and does not teach you anything in terms of linux. If people want to learn linux the right way install Slackware that is a distrobution that was geared for learning linux i mean its rock solid.

why fedora

Im not trying to be negative. When i started Linux I had no help i basically installed them all and stayed with slack, now that It has been 8 years im just trying to pass non-biases jugement. I use to love redhat when it was at 7.1-7.3 those version were so nice - then 8 came out and it went downhill. Now the enterprise version are sweet - its just fedora i think people who are just starting out should not install. Dont you agree and im not trying to start a flame war. And mandriva is another horrible distro I think what do you think

I agree with some of your sentiments. Fedora Core is not really a spectacular distro, but the reason why its popular is its links with Redhat. It has a lot of good features for the server side of things, but as a desktop OS, other distros have better features.

I have been using fedora for a while and it works great for me once you get to know in and out. Basically if a little friendly user but it also requires a lots of teaks to make do your will.

I tried slackware and it was fast and stable but unfortunally I did not have time to read every single how to about making and installing packages. The rpm package system it better then tar ball or even debian. But I think that is what also slows down fedora. Anyhow, for me it is a great distro.

Some people enjoy the point an click style of windows but want to move to linux. I started out with redhat 6 and have been using it now with Fedora Core 3 installed on my laptop. Also Fedora core has a very good selection with Wireless. I do agree with you though Fedora Core is not a very fast version of linux and does slow a person from learning linux You have to remeber that everyone is different. I learn at a moderate pace while the next man/woman might learn at a slower pace. It all deals with who you are dealing with.

That is why I try to seek to understand then seek to be understood.

All distros come with a command line in which you can do anything you want (even learn Linux)...so what's the complaint robrecc?

None of the distros are garbage...It's all basically GNU/Linux. It's really all about your preferences

I will agree that Fedora may install a little more packages than slackware. I have switched to slackware and enjoyed it alot more than Fedora but that is my choice.

DoubleJoon is very much on track with his post. I could not agree more. All distro's have a purpose. While others my out perform they do that with a cost somewhere else.

If you want the Fedora look try Centos 4.2. It's very stable and is a repackage of RedHat EL.

I started with Redhat9 and I stick even today with a Redhat based distro, this is CentOS. I had all Fedora versions and I really liked it. What made me switch to CentOS are the many upgrades, but sometimes I really think of switching my desktop back to Fedora.
What I like on this distro is that it has a lot of packages out of the box, so I if I want to install a new package I regulary don't have to install 20 other to meet my dependencies like it is on a smaller distro. For example I tried Ubuntu and I needed some php and mysql modules, when I started apt-get ... I tought it'll never end, there where a loooot of unavailable libs. With a little tweak Fedora is stable enough for a desktop. It's running on servers like www.wikipedia.org, www.kerneltrap.org and AFAIK it's running on Disney servers and www.sourceforge.net too.
I have tried other distros too, Slackware, Debian (and Ubuntu), Mandrake, SuSe and others but none was so exciting like Fedora. It's simple, you have a lot of stuff and if you want to learn something, you can do it, noone keeps you away from manually (un)installin, configuring, changing apps from command line and compiling them by yourself. And if you want to speed up your time and have good packages you install from rpm.
I don't want to say now that Fedora is the best, I like just like it the way you like Slackware, but I don't start writing in the Slack forum or SuSe forum how horrible that distro is. What about all users write in the other forums what a bad distro that is and how great their is. Fedora is one of the most used distros, like Slackware too, that does not mean it's a bad distro if it's in the top list. Just check this link and see it for yourself, Slack isn't even in top 8, and based on Linux Journal's 2005 winners, Fedora is on the 3-rd place, while Slackware is somehow absent.
All distributions have something interesting, and I liked on all something that only that distro had it.
So please next time you want to bloat a forum with a thread about a distro you did not liked ... please read doublejoon post over and over again.

Boby

Another reason Fedora may seem slow is that it uses Gnome 2.10. 2.12 and eventually 2.14 have had major work done to improve performance....

Slackware is nice, and a great distro if you are technically- or linux-inclined. However for the average computer user, fedora is a pretty nice learning distro, imho. For the average user, slackware is somewhat like jumping into the deep end of the pool to learn to swim, though. There is a distro for everyone, whether it's slack, fedora, (gulp) mandriva, red hat, or any other distro. To each his own, I guess.

robrecc, I disagree that you are not trying to be negative.
I am not even a big Fedora user. I ran across it because I was interested to install ASPLinux. It is Fedora based. I was impressed enough that I tried Fedora Core 4. I just fool with them, nothing big, but they run just fine.
Anyone is free to learn as little or as much as they want with either Fedora or Slackware.
Your post would be better with a IMO or IMHO as that is what it is.

Basically you are given the choice to install what you need...so don't install all the packages.

To learn Linux obtain a book or read the web or post in this helpful forum....You are expecting an OS to teach you Linux!!!!! What is next???? Cooking your lunch!!!

I think you are being a bit unfair here. What makes you think that people do not use Slack? Don't justify it with the netcraft stats that you linked to because they are for server installations running Linux on the web so they don't reflect overall market share. Slack has a big following and is one of the oldest Linux distros still in existence and I am sure that if people were not using it, it would have disappeared just like others over the years.
