where to download

Ok this might sound stupid but when I go to download something like Java what folder do I download it to? When I try to select a Dir. the farthest I can go is to "srv" . Also for something like java should I be logged in as root or can I still be logged in under my user name?

You can download Java in you home directory. No need to good far anywhere..!!!

You better install it at a global location, say /usr/java where many could access it

When you download something it does not mean that you are installing it.

So, if you are just downloading so you can install it just download it to your home folder or somewhere where you can latter find it.

Right, If you want to do a 'global' installation then you switch to root before installing.

yes, that's correct. Make sure u find threads for setting environment variables for java to work anywhere (from any directory in the shell!)
If I find the thread, I 'll post it....
