whats the deal with FC3
 

So far I am not enjoying it...sorry I know there is another thread on this.

Some problems i have:
the desktop does not fit on my screen...on a 1024x768 resolution the screen is stretched too far to the right and goes off the monitor. Will installing my video card drivers solve this?

there are no kde or xfce themes? whats the deal with this? Why would you have the desktop environments without themes? So those desktop environments aren't working properly currently. I also forgot to add, no icons on the desktop either, except for the trash icon. Is it supposed to be that way?

I cannot hear the test sounds for the sound card setup and sounds do not always work in the OS for me...I have an internal intel soundcard btw

the number one problem for me is that my wireless router does not work in FC3. I consider this a big problem, since it worked fine in Redhat 9.
Heres the steps I took to install my Linksys WMP54G wireless router using ndiswrapper

Open terminal
$ tar -zxvf ndiswrapper.tar.gz <--to extract to ndiswrapper-0.7 folder
$ cd ndiswrapper-0.7
$ make install
$ modprobe ndiswrapper
$ ndiswrapper -i /home/jerry/Downloads/wmp54g/Drivers/bcmwl5.inf
$ ndiswrapper -l <--to see the installed drivers...results from that:
bcmwl5 present
$ ndiswrapper -m <--this adds wlan0 to /etc/modules.conf and will start at boot
**In Redhat9 I used to go into modules.conf and type ndiswrapper if_name=eth%d because the internet configuration gui does not show wlan, only eth...this is not necessary in FC3

I then proceed to reboot the computer...just to make sure, I reopen the terminal and type
$ modprobe ndiswrapper <--just to make sure it is loaded
I then go into system tools(?) and go to the internet configuration wizard, choose wireless network(?) and follow the instructions. You will see wlan0(ndiswrapper) as an option, you select that and click next...then procede to enter whatever other options you would like.

This is EXACTLY how I did it in Redhat9 and it worked perfectly...however, in FC3 once I go to activate wlan0 it tells me 'unable to determine IP, check link?' I am not sure what the deal is with that...but if anyone can offer advice I'm listening. I will probably search the wireless networking forum to see if I can find anything.

So far my biggest problems are the screen size and router problem...at the moment I am kind of wishing I had stayed with Redhat9. I could've upgraded to FC2 but purposely waited til FC3 was out because I wanted the latest OS. I don't wanna regret the update, and the usage of 4 CD-R's.:cry:

Themes in KDE are there or you did not downlaod/install the necessary thing (they are there for me).
Yes, there is only suppose to be a trash can icon. If you want others, create them. That is a KDE thing, not fedora.

The screen thing, you probably do not have the right monitor settings.

net install does not download the extra themes for kde for some reason. also in fedora core 3 you have to enable sound server startup in root first then in all other user profiles subsequently. In volume controls you'll find a whole lot of extra options. I recommend disabling the 3d options and max your cd/pcm/video levels and use the main volume control as your primary. Be sure after you adjust your volume levels in each user that you save current setup when you logout or it will revert back (possibly). FC3 took a bit of tweaking but now it works better for me than any other distro of Fedora Core to date. Good luck!

oh okay so no themes came for kde if you downloaded the isos from online? I was not aware of that...with 4 cds I think they could have put it in there somewhere. Oh well, I guess I can just get them from kde-look.org once I get my internet situation figured out.

As far as my screen problem, I do have the right settings...they work perfectly fine in Windows XP and worked just fine in Redhat 9. It just seems that the right hand side of the screen goes on for just a little bit too long...while the rest is fine. I can view everything in 800x600 but I don't think anybody under 60 should have to look at a screen that big. Not sure what to try next...

On your Monitor desktop screen going off of the viewable area of your CRT. You have adjusted the monitor itself to bring the immage within the viewable area of the screen?

Jeez I have the excat linksys box also and all that I did is turned off the machine, hooked up the router and booted back up, works like a champ.
Had no problems what so ever

sound, I'm not sure how that works yet...I'm sure I will still have problems like usual. With all the 'no sound in FC3' threads I see its obvious I am not the only one... When are people going to come out with linux compatible boxes?

my internet, is highly annoying...I get it working just fine...then I restart the computer and it fails to load because it tells me 'different mac address than expected'...THEN it somehow is detecting my ndiswrapper drivers as ethernet instead of wireless...WHY? I don't know but I really don't wanna have to resetup everything anytime I get on the internet. There is something I have to edit manually but I don't know what it is...

Overall, I'm starting to like it alot better...if I could get my internet 100% I would be pretty much satisfied...because then it would be on par with Redhat9 that I was using before.

I do have a question though? Since FC3 is fairly new where do u guys go for FC3 rpms? Or do we have to use FC2 rpms in the meantime?
