What kind of mic input is on toshiba c55-a5126 mono/stereo

Is there a way in software to determine whether the mic input is mono or
stereo?

Possibly.

In KDE, the kmixer audio control specifies whether an input is stereo or mono. (In Slackware, there is Pulse underneath.)

If you have pavucontrol (the Pulse Audo mixer) installed, you can click on the "Recording" tab and it should report whether the input is stereo or mono.

Let us know what you find.

(If the computer is not absolutely ancient, the input is most likely stereo.)

In the Gnome desktop environment you can check under Settings > Hardware > Sound
On my laptop it states "Profile: Analog Stereo Output". Test Speakers gives sound
from the front left and front right.

Or, in a terminal run "speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -t wav" to hear "Front left, front right". Ctrl+C to stop the script.

Or, in a terminal run "alsa-info.sh" and when it prompts "Automatically upload ALSA information to www.alsa-project.org? [y/N] :" press y then Enter.
In that link look for [Audio Output].
