What exactly is Samba?

I have seen the term thrown around a lot but have no real grasp on what it is..

Also if anyone can tell me, by default what form of shell scripting is used on FD5? I'm new to shell, and trying to learn the commands, but I find constantly that my commands aren't correct because they don't apply to my particular shell..

There are several definitions of Samba at http://us5.samba.org/samba/what_is_samba.html. Broadly, it lets Windows clients get access to file/print services from your Linux box via some authentication mechanism.

You're probably using bash as your shell, but try typing echo $SHELL in a terminal window to make sure.
