web access VERY slow

I have recently installed FC2 and have found that Firefox, Thunderbird and Up2date/Synaptic/Yum all spend a LOT of time waiting before downloading a site. I have disabled ipv6 in case this is the cause, but no change. Using Windoze (including Firefox) does not have the same problem.

Once the connection is established, download speed is fine. To check this posting preview took about 1 minute!

Can anyone suggest a solution please? I am a relative newbie.

many thanks
