Wayland session not starting with NVidia card or Intel HD Graphics

I have a fresh installation of Fedora 26 installed on my desktop. My discrete graphics card is an NVidia GTX 580 and I have Intel HD Graphics on an Ivybridge i5-3450.

A Wayland GNOME session starts normally when running off the live USB using the Nouveau driver. However, on the installed system the whole machine hangs after logging in using gdm. Everything works fine when using Nouveau with X11.

As a workaround I tried booting with the Intel HD graphics set as the primary display device in the BIOS. The system does not hang, however with the Intel graphics I am unable to start a Wayland GNOME session. When I log in from gdm with "GNOME" selected (not "GNOME with xorg") it still loads an X11 GNOME session.

I would be interested to know:

1) why Nouveau + Wayland appears to work with the live USB session, but not on the installed system;

2) why GNOME is starting an X11 session when I use the Intel HD Graphics.

I suspect log files will provide the answer here, but as a relative beginner I'm not sure which logs will be relevant, so any advice would be appreciated.

I physically removed the NVidia card from the machine and a Wayland session with Intel started just fine. My problem could be related to this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1403512
