VLC with glitchy sound

I find that VLC is running poorly on Fedora 8. The sound keeps breaking up and clicking. I've tried changing the audio output module as recommended on several sites as a solution, but it didn't help.

Same exact problem with Ubuntu 8.04 (no problem with earlier versions of Ubuntu). Changing from ALSA to PulseAudio to OSS did not fix problem for me.
