Several times this has happened to me, and I simply cannot find out how/where to change the settings. I have a older card that is supported under RedHat with 16 Meg video on it. As it turns out the default video RAM is a paltry 512K and unless I am carefull, I get a pretty unusable dfesktop. How does one change the settings so that I can increase my resolution?
Also, when there is a built in video card (shared memory), how do we set that up?
then more for other bit depths. The modes section shows the resolutions that can be used at this bit depth 800x600 being the default. You can then use <ctrl><alt><num +> and <num -> to change your resolution between the available resolutions. You can have as many resolutions as are supported by your monitor on the Modes line
I have seen several posts on your recommendation. The sad thing is that I remember when I installed RH9.0, during the installation there was an option to set the video card memory... This is a 3dlabs permedia generic with 16Meg Video... which is fine for what I need to do. It worked fine under RH9, but when I did a fresh install on Fedora, this option screen is no longer presented.
I have fiddled with the XF86Config for several hours now, and everytime I get into the login prompt, I need to ctl-alt +- to see that it is visible. I know that this should support 24 bit at 1024x768, but I can't get it to work.
On a follow up note, the box I have has a cheapy built in shared video memroy adapter. I did not even attempt to set that baby up... especially since I had the Permedia laying around...
In the graphics card section under Driver put in the line
VideoRam 16384
Some distro's use different locations for xfree configuration type
man XF86Config to see the various locations of the file
Did that. Then I go into display settings and I get 640x480 and 800x600. Only once, for a briefe time did I get 1024x768, and I never got that to work in any but 8 bit color. Any other ideas?
So I reinstalled RH9, and after all the headache, I think it has to do with the monitor, not the card. I have been testing on an anchient monitor that is probably at best SVGA...
Tomorrow I will reattempt Fedora, but this time focus on an upgrade mainly...
