Unhappy Using Vesa driver wont start GNOME

I have FC5 and when I'm using ati drivers I cant change my resolution to 1680x1050.

But then I change my driver to: vesa- generic VESA-compliant video cards then and when I reboot X I get the resolution 1680x1050 (in login screen there is 1680x1050) BUT when I insert username and password the screen goes to black and the GNOME wont start. I get back to login screen? What can cause this problem ?
