is that your way will allowing me to type Chinese words during i'm in English locale of X?

Hi,
I have managed to get the above 3 (latest version) from the sf website, and installed it from the source.

Now my problem is, how do i input chinese characters from there after restart? there seems to be nothing like those in IIIM where there is an input window pops up.

Ive tried to install skim but it says i need another file which is not in my system + scim-1.1 which i arleady have in my system.


any one can help?

To seow_ming That is right you can you can type Chinese while in English session, you can have everything in English, just like me, I'm not Chinese, and therefore can not type to much Chinese well around 1000 I can type, but what I'm saying that all my set up is 100% english, but with the most common Chinese fonts installed.

To ksmj what Linux distro are you using ? The above was only for redhat

i know you were talking about redhat, but i know that this should work on fedora too. I am using fedora core 3.

To ksmj Fedora fc3 does not work with those RPM's I'm also trying to get one of my Fedora fc3 machines working with scim, but so far I also have no luck.
When I figure it out I will let you know the howto.

o well, this is what i did

i use the 1.0.2 instead as there is an rpm for it. i install that one and now it is working fine. can input chinese wihtout any problem.

it doesn't work on amsn though. still trying out on other applications.

Hi ksmj you are using fedora fc3 ? Have you tried it with star office or any none GTK applications ?
Did you not also install scim-chinese ?

from my knowledge by reading the sf webpage, the scim-pinyin is the scim-chinese (it says has been renamed to scim-pinyin somewhere in the website).

yes i am using fc3, i have no star office so I am not sure how it goes with that. but i've tried it with web browsers, email applications etc.

so far i found that it doesn't work on amsn, yahoo messenger. Haven't tried extensively with those applications available but so far so good. will be great though if it works with amsn and yahoo messenger.

by the way, one thing that i've noticed is that, my open office doesn't work anymore. When i launch the open office, the splash screen comes up, and the window shows up properly, but i can't type or click on anything (menu/button) in the open office window. I can move the window around though. When i uninstalled scim, it works fine again.


not sure what's the problem, so far no luck of fixing it.

I have same problems with fedora fc3, but with star office 7 same as yours, and in somecase the computer freeses just before starting X, and just sits there until you do a ctrl+c and then it boots normally, then when I delete scim everything works correct, but in redhat scim works 100%, the same with Suse scim works just perfect.

mine boot ok, everything else is fine except open office doesn't work.

have you found any solution for that?

Can you please tell me step by step how you managed to get scim working in fedora fc3, then I will attempt to install it again and look at open office issue for you.

get scim from here is the easiest,

download that and install it, it should be working without any problem.

Hi I know I tried this or perhaps another rpm and it did not work - I will try again, but anyhow you also need scim-chinese, and scim-tables.

that's right, sorry missed that out. but i use scim-pinyin instead of scim-chinese.
