Easiest way, would be to install Fedora onto your hard drive on a different computer, then move the hard drive back to that machine, preferably with the newest kernel installed.
Is this a SATA tale of woe? You dont actually specify the exact problem, just that you have one.
As for cutting your own disk i dont know, but maybe you could try the Fedora Unity site. They offer respins that include all the latest updates, including probably the latest kernel (2.6.23), so you may have better luck with a respin.
