i got 40gb hardisk 384mb ddr ram and amd athlon 2000XP + processor
My linux hardisk partition for fedora core1
/boot 100mb
swap 698md
/ rest of the disk space
my booting speed is very slow has anything gone wrong with the partition?
and when i install my nvidia card drivers the booting becomes more slow
pls pls help urgently.
is it that fedora core 1 boots slow
It's unlikely to be a problem with the partitions - part of the boot process automatically checks for data corruption and informs you if there is a problem. The problem could be related to hardware/drivers, particularly hardware detection or network initialisation.
First try removing any proprietary drivers and unplugging all nonessential devices (e.g. USB), then booting from cold. If it's still slow in this basic state then check the logs for error messages. The easiest way to look at the logs is with Systems Tools > System Logs. You need to look at the Boot Log, Kernel Start Log, and System Messages. These are the files /var/log/boot.log, /var/log/dmesg, and /var/log/messages, respectively. If you can see an error but can't understand it, the first thing to do is put the text of the error in Google. Failing that, post the relevent errors here.
RH 9 is out of official support, and Fedora Core 1 will be transfered to Legacy on Monday, so I would move up to Fedora Core 2 if you want to try a different version. FC2 uses kernel 2.6 rather than 2.4, so you may lose this problem, but it might be best to get an idea of the cause before trying an reinstall.
Linux is much slower to boot than XP, but on that spec of machine it shouldn't take more than 40 seconds or so. Can you describe where the slowness is evident ? Is it generally sluggish, or does it pause at some point ?
Yup U got To the Point Before I could Come on it
wel by fedora linux pauses for some sec during the nvidia logo
screen or somes time the logo hangs the system. then when i login it pauses for quite a time on the gnome logo screen
A correction: end of support for Fedora Core 1 has now been deferred to 20th September.
The boot process shouldn't just hang. The Nvidia logo means that you still have Nvidia's proprietary drivers installed, which are known to sometimes make systems unstable. There may be another problem, but the Nvidia drivers are one complication that you can remove.
The main issue is really to be satisified that there isn't a hardware fault and that networking is OK (GNOME does a DNS check during the startup).
I have a SATA hdd and Iam having the exact same problem with fedora 2 installed.
If I take out my SATA harddisk and install Fedora on a PATA harddisk the problem resolves itself.

please define "my booting speed is very slow". Tell me how long does it take your computer too boot Fedora Core 1? I used to have FC1 and it used to boot in like 45seconds. Now I have FC2 and it boots in about 35s flat.
