Upgraded FC3 progs can't find libstdc++.so.5

Since I upgraded to Fedora core 3, there are a few programs that won't start because they can't find dependency libstdc++.so.5. Some of them were installed from source, so I recompiled one of them (djvulibre). RealPlayer 10 is one that won't start now but that is closed source Mono won't work now and they don't have FC3 RPMs yet, and mono changes so fast that I don't think it's worth installing from source. Mind you, it is FC2 RPMs on my computer. I'll upgrade them when FC3 RPMs become available. But is there any symbolic link I can make for the time being that will get me by? A sort of crutch till FC3 is better supported. I tried making a few but they just produced different error messages.

And I'll tell you what else. I downloaded the ISOs with bittorrent and burnt them on a Windoze machine. And the media checker program on the Fedora installation program tells me that two of the four media failed the test. So I reburnt them and they failed again. So then, I boots up the windoze box with Mandrake Move Live CD , checks the MD5 sums (redundant when you use bittorrent apparently because it hashes them anyway) of the ISOs, then does:

dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2048 count=(half of the value got with "df -k") | md5sum

and guess what, the md5 sums were the same as for the ISO files. What's up with that? Is the Fedora media check thingy telling me porkies or what? Or is it just reading them with different cdrom drives?

I'll post my own reply to my own post since nobody else is.

I just stumbled across the answer a minute ago. There are some packages for legacy software development such as compat-libstdc++. They come as part of the distro. Install those and magic - there's your libstdc++.so.5 in /usr/lib!

So there you go. Real Player 10 is working again, as well as monodevelop but there is another problem with monodoc. But you can access the mono documentation through monodevelop. Better sort it out though.

Answer to Monodoc problem was to make a symbolic link in /usr/lib like so:

cd /usr/lib

ln -s libgtkhtml-3.1.so.11.0.4 libgtkhtml-3.0.so.4

The altenative would have been to edit the gtkhtml-sharp.dll.config file located in:

/usr/lib/mono/gac/gtkhtml-sharp/1.0.0.0__35e10195dab3c99f

and edit it to make it point to libgtkhtml-3.1.so.11.0.4 instead of libgtkhtml-3.0.so.4, but the first method was simpler.

(Answering my own posts again)

How about that then. I upgraded to Fedora core 3 this afternoon and got all my major problems sorted out already (with the help of my good friend Mr.Google)

Right, I hope somebody else will post to this thread now. Fed up of answering all my own questions!

While that may work, that is not ideal - there are differences that may cause problems in the future. That's why the libraries had their numbers changed - they are not guaranteed to provide identical functionallity as the shared library of an earlier version.

I had a similar issue with getting gnomesword to build in FC3 - the libgtkhtml3 was too new. So I created a compatability rpm for that.

I'll post a link to it in just a few minutes
It also needs a compat-libgal2 packages.

Here ya go.
Installing them may require that you install some dependencies - but they are available from Fedora base.

These were compiled on a FC3 system - the spec files are basically the fc2 spec files for these packages but with the name changed to compat-blah

If you need the devel header files

Cool

Thanks for posting this informaiton. I was struggling with the RealPlayer 10 installation and could have had to spend alot of time looking for this answer without your posts. I'm pretty pleased with FC3, actually, now that this little bug is fixed.

Thanks again.
