Updating Fedora 7 with PHP 5.2.8
 

Im updating my businesses web server which is currently running Fedora 7. In order to be PCI compliant we have been told to upgrade from PHP 5.2.6 to 5.2.8. All the packages are labeled as development and for different versions of Fedora such as Fedora 10.

Im not sure if this is an issue or not and hope I have given enough information.

What you gain in "PCI compliance" you may lose in server stability. I doubt there is anything critically different between those PHP releases. Mixing repos (fc7 and fc10) can get messy and I've been burned in the past by doing this. I would either stick with what you have, upgrade the whole box to fc10, look for a backport package for fc7, or compile your own. Or what I would really actually do is just stay put with the old version of PHP and tell management to thumb it.

Support for F7 was dropped quite a while ago. Running any business (secure) application on an unsupported OS version (Linux or other) is unwise. IF you cannot keep up with Fedora's cycle (and for a server there is not need) switch to a longer lived distro. Centos is RHEL(Red Hat Enterprise Linux) with the logos removed. It gets the RH source rpms and rebuilds them without the proprietary parts (so it is binary compatible wit REHL). It is free to download/update (unlike RHEL) and has a 5 year support life. RHEL (and therefore Centos) backports security patches into all their rpms. So despite it showing an older version number, it is just as secure as the "current" versions.
