Updating Fedora 3 with yum

I've been looking through the list of updates for FC3 on yum. There are some rpm's listed that I've already updated manually, not through yum (open office, thunderbird, plus a few others built from latest source etc) so, when I run: # yum update
it still tries to download/update the packages that I've already updated manually. In one case it's rolling back to a previous version to the one I installed through source.
There must be a way of getting yum to update my system without downloading packages that I've already downloaded/built, but I'm unsure of where to start; is it going to be a case of specifying every package individually that I want updated? (this is going to be a pain/time consuming coz there's a lot of 'em) Or is there a simpler way?
Any pointers on correct syntax to use would be a help as I can't seem to find it in the yum how-to's that I've read.

Thanks in advance.

Right. Yum examines the package versions tracked in your local RPM database. Whenever you install software manually and not via RPM, your installation and RPM database get out-of-sync. Avoid that.

Thanks for the replies.
I must have missed the exclude option in yum's manual - it was late... blurry eyes etc...
Anyway, the exclude option works.

Thanks again.
