update software in Fedora 9 can not retrieve repository metadata

I use Fedora 9 with a 2006 AMD Athlon 3700 Gateway PC with Verizon DSL. The internet connection shows as wired eth0, and I can surf web pages fine with the Firefox browser. But when the updater runs it gives an error; can not retrieve repository metadata, and so does not get any software updates. Also should I configure my DSL connection as a standard DSL type with a user name, password, and the service provider, rather than as a direct wired ethernet type network connection ? Maybe the repository web site may be down at this time ?

Fedora infrastructure (incl. RPM repos) is down.
