up2date problem
 

I have the red exclamation icon, everytime i try to update itsays i need to register at rhn and register my system. I'm registered, and it shows that I have no systems. How am I supposed to register it? it gives me no options anywhere to do this to add my system so I can do an update

Up2Date - No registration
 

Humm,

A lot of ppl are having trouble with up2date.. I've tried for three days (cable net connection) to get the blasted thing to work, finaly I just gave up and used yum in a terminal window. Worked fine just out of the box..

Steps
1) Open a terminal and su to root.
2) type updatedb
3) then run yum update
4) Now install em yum upgrade

Or if your lazy like me skip steps 3 & 4 and just run yum upgrade to dl/update all packages =)

PS... up2date notices that the packages are updated and switches the red ! over to a blue check.

well i found a faq and basically said to enter the command "up2date --register" to register my system. i went back to the computer 20 minutes later to see that nothing happened, cursor blinking on next line with no prompt. but i will try what you suggested

Like I said up2date has been giving lots of folks problems.. somewhere I read you can up date the server list and sometimes that helps but I don't like bad hacks like that...

You probably just need to download the newest version. I forgot where it is though :)

I've never had any luck with up2date. Yum or apt are really good for updating.

There's some tutorials at http://fedoranews.org that tell how to edit your server lists. I wouldn't consider them "bad hacks" as you're simply using mirrors of Redhat to pull down the updates. Otherwise, it will take FOREVER to download updates from Redhat. Trust me :)

I used up2date fine, after making some modifications to the source file.
I also suggest that you DO NOT register with RedHat, since I have read that many people got problems with broken keys (like me, I did download a program with a "broken key", thought it wouldnt install anyways but no, it did, crashed and lost my GUI terminal.. got to Reinstall Fedora! so dont register if you want my advise!).
If you want to use my source, no problem (there is info of what I did + link of my source file) ---> here.
I tried with yum but I prefer the easy graphical interface of up2date.

the version of up2date (2.1.2) that shipped with FC1 has a small bug in it--it prompts you about registration, even though you don't need to register.

once you update up2date (through apt-get, up2date, yum, or whatever), the prompt will go away.

You can even blast through the "registration" prompt and you'll happily get your updates.

Ok thats why they dont bother me asking to register now ;-) I see !
