Hi,
I currently have fedora core3 installed as my linux box. I want to uninstall that and provide that space in the hard disk for windows.
can i do that?
Sure you can uninstall Fedora. If you want to install a new Windows system, you can format the drives as FAT32 or NTFS when installing from the cd, or you use a tool like fdisk or another partition tool, there are many on the web available for free.
I have tried a procedure to uninstall Fedora . But all the 3 opearting systems that I have installed are lost. Thats so pain u know.
The procedure I have followed is as follows:
First, I booted from the FC3 1st CD and entered into rescue mode. Then I have typed the folowing commands.
1.fdisk
I had to delete the /dev/hda6.So,
2. fdisk /dev/hda6
Then I was in a prompt to press m for help.
3. Then at the prompt, I pressed 'd'
This is to delete a partition.this asked me which drive I mean 1-6,I gave 6
4. Then w to save.
And when I exited the rescue mode, I entered into a GRUB prompt.
I dont know why.
I did a very simple stupid thing again. Entered into the rescue mode again and typed the following command.
dd if =/dev/zero of=/dev/hda count=1
Then I typed fdisk.
SURPRISED TO SEE NO operating system was there and all the 80GB hard disk was fresh again.
THATS NOT FAIR.
I just wanted to uninstall FC3 and install WINDOWS in that partition.
Whats the possible way to do that?
HOPE I WILL GET AN ANSWER .
I have started reinstalling all my operating systems again. It will take time and I really say TIME is MONEY.
Boot from the Windows cd and when you're asked to choose partition where to install you can delete all partitions, I think with "d". Then it'll reformat them for you.
Good luck!
You didn't need to uninstall Fedora first. All you had to do was install Windows on the Fedora partition (after formatting that partition). Your other operating systems would have remained intact, though Windows would have overwritten your MBR, causing you to be unable to boot into Linux if your boot loader was installed on the MBR. You would have to reinstall GRUB after installing Windows (I think. Not positive about the procedure for installing Windows after Linux, though).
