You should check for (dot files hidden) like .gstreamer-0.8 etc for some conflicting lines.

There is only one file in it called registry-i386.xml (~/.gstreamer-0.8/registry-i386.xml). The contents of the file are as below. I don't see any conflicts:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<GST-PluginRegistry>
<gst-plugin-paths>
</gst-plugin-paths>
</GST-PluginRegistry>

Try Xine or Real PLayer

Try using Xine or/and real player. Both work great on my distro. I suppose its available for all the distro. They also provide the sources so you can compile and run them. AFAIK Xine works with windoz file fformat (i.e., .wmv) with the necessay plugin. Real Player works great with streaming video, though doesn't support much file format. After installing xine and real player, i never had to bother about totem. This web-page Fedoranews.org
might be usefull when installing real player.

TOTEM message "Resource busy or not available"

Hi, i've got same problem like you, i try to look around for some solution and totem runs now ok for me, so you could try run
1. gstreamer-properties
- try to play with setting....

2. gst-visualise-0.8
you probably will get some kind of error like this
No configuration file /root/.gst found. You might want to create one.
Running gst-launch-0.8 osssrc ! goom ! { queue ! ffmpegcolorspace ! xvimagesink }
RUNNING pipeline ...
ERROR: from element /pipeline0/thread0/xvimagesink0: Resource busy or not available.
Additional debug info:
xvimagesink.c(739): gst_xvimagesink_get_xv_support: /pipeline0/thread0/xvimagesink0:
No port available
ERROR: pipeline doesn't want to play.

3. gst-register-0.8

and you can try to run other gst-xxxx utilities or check gstreamer.freedesktop web site for more information. on my FC4 is after these steps totem running ok. But i dont know exactly what is problem, i think something with alsa/sound settings, assuming because ressource busy or not available, if you find somethig please share your knowledge....

for everybody : we must share our knowledge, only this way we could beat the windoze "click and run" systems...

Had the same problem. Open the multimedia systems selector under desktop/preferences/more preferences. Neither audio or video default settings worked on my PC. I had to change to OSS audio, and xwindows no/xv to get working codecs. It's still not the greatest player though.
