Troubleshooting Display

I've got Fedora 9 w/ Nvidia drivers installed and had everything working fine - until i screwed it all up. I found out about those nifty Compiz Fusion plugins and started flipping random switches until weird things started to happen. Like, while Desktop Effects were enabled, it would take away the window title bars, rendering them unmovable, so I'd have to right-click on their taskbar tab and choose "move" to move them around. (Don't know if it's related, but my taskbars seem to shuffle around after a shutdown or reboot and my audio settings default to specific settings that I have to change.) So now - *gasp* - I CAN'T PLAY MY GAMES!!! So I've gotta get this fixed before I die.

It looks like there are several issues causing several problems. First, no quake3-based games will work and I can't get anything like the Second Life linux client to load or World of Warcraft under Wine. (I get the same problems in Fluxbox.)

When I try to run Tremulous at the command line:
Code:

[Galaxy_Stranger@localhost ~]$ tremulous

Sys_Error: GLimp_Init() - could not load OpenGL subsystem

Tremulous, Padman, Open Arena and Urban Terror all wind up with the same error. Alien Arena, on the other hand, starts to run, kicks-out and changes my deskstop resolution. Interestingly enough, native Doom3 does the same thing.

The Second Life linux client puts up a window that says, "Window creation error" with an "OK" button and nothing else.

World of Warcrack under Wine puts up a window that says, "Failed to find a suitable display device. Exiting program" with an OK button.

On top of that, I uninstalled Compiz and Compiz-Fusion, then reinstalled all the basic Compiz packages including "Compiz Configuration Manager", "Emerald Theme Manager" and "GL Desktop" - no Compiz-Fusion. Now, when I go to enable Desktop Effects, I get an error window that says, "Desktop effects could not be enabled" with an OK button. When I go to "GL Desktop" and activate it, the entire screen goes white. I have a mouse cursor and my audio keeps playing. I hit <ctrl>+<alt>+<backspace> to relogin and the desktop goes back to normal.

So this tells me a couple things I think. GL must not be configured correctly, and there might be a problem w/ DirectX in my installation of Wine.

Did I leave any information out? What's the next step? What should I look at?

Last I heard DirectX did not work on wine. For the wine stuff you will probably have better luck checking over a wineHQ.org .

DirectX will run under wine. Here's a howto:

DirectX under wine

In order to find dxdiag where it is supposed to be, you have to run wine in Win2000 mode when installing DirectX, but other than that it worked fairly smoothly for me.
