Question Totem does not start

I am using FEDORA CORE 4 . Totem does not start up . A box pops up saying 'Totem could not start '. And 'Device or Resource busy ' . Whatever I do I cannot get a more helpful message .. What are the things to check ? I have installed xine-lib and xine is working . I also have gstreamer . Totem is 1.0.4.1 .

can you run other media apps such as another video player or xmms? is the sound card configured properly? does running totem from the console display any useful information?

Have you installed GDK and GTK+ libraries? What are the permissions on totem? try running as root.

Have you tried opening a local video from your harddisk?

Do a #man totem at terminal(console). Try running with --debug flag and post the output here.

I personally suggest using Kaffeine or Xine as the video player. Both are rock solid ( provided you've installed all the proper codecs)

I did mention that Xine is working OK . I am not sure I have heard of GDK. Just wanted to give Totem a try.

did rpm -qa |grep GDK as well as GTK .
There is no mention of GDK. Should not that have been installed as a dependency if needed.
Totem -debug gives NO output .
You require the output for the man page (?)
#man totem merely gives the man page.
No difference running totem as root.

Thumbs up

Just to say that Totem is working fine . And this maybe of help to others . I followed instructions given in http://stanton-finley.net about FC4 installation . It seems it requires you to remove the current totem and install a totem-xine through yum.
