Toshiba Satellite A665 backlight no workee with kernel update

Updated the kernel and now the backlight can not be adjusted up or down even though the GUI with the bars pops up and the bars darken and lighten with "fn-F6" and "fn-F7" keys. (Thats the function key along with the F6 and F7 keys.) The brightness just stays the same. Modified /boot/grub2/grub.cfg with "grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg" after modifying /etc/default/grub appropriately to boot the old kernel and the backlight is adjustable again. I did a search on this forum and nothing pertinent came up. Google was no help either. :*( So after doing what I thought was a good thing (which was no small matter with dial up internet connection) I'm back on the old kernel. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I am happy to report this problem is solved with the latest kernel update for Fedora 16, kernel 3.2.9-2.fc16.x86_64.

SharpyWarpy 03-20-2012 09:47 PM

I am sad to say that even with kernel update 3.2.9-2.fc16.x86_64 the problem occurs. It worked the first few boots then quit. Sometimes the little window with the light-dark bars will show up and sometimes they don't. But whether they do or not the backlight does not darken or lighten with "fn-F6" or "fn-F7". When I fall back to the original kernel this problem is not present. So I have a question or two. What program is it that controls the backlight? Is there an update for it and if so what is the package name that I need to update? My thinking is if I can update that maybe it will work with the new kernel. Thanks ahead of time.

Does anybody know if there are any other updates pertaining to the backlight I should update to help with this? I use the backlight dimming feature a lot sitting up on the bed beside my wife. She suffers from illness that keeps her bedridden much of the time and I need to be with her. Dimming the backlight -- especially at night -- enables her to rest without being disturbed by a bright light next to her. Thanks in advance.

Updated to kernel 3.3.0-4.fc16.x86_64 and still no joy. Back to original kernel.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the order in which the modules load. I have attached two text files with the output of "lsmod" while running each kernel. Can somebody have a look and see what I might do if there is a problem with that? I noticed with both the fourth line from the bottom -- with kernel 3.1.0-7 module i2c_algo_bit is there but with kernel 3.3.0-4 it is not. Now, I tried loading that module with modprobe and it loaded sucessfully but still no backlight functionality. As I said the gui bars show up and the bars light up and down with "fn-F6" and "fn-F7" but the backlight does not change. Is it possible I can change the order in which these modules load and possibly correct this? Frankly I don't know which module(s) is/are required for adjusting the backlight but I can't find anything on this subject in spite of looking everywhere I can think of to look. Any hints or clues will be appreciated as I want to run the latest kernel and I can't do that without control of the backlight.Attachment 9303
