Top of windows disappear.
 

Hi, I'm kind of new to Linux and am currently running Fedora 7. For the most part it is great except every now and then I get this glitch where the top (blue) part of my windows disappear. The very top where the minimize/maximize/close buttons are. The window stays the same, just without that section. I can still close windows through the file menu, but I can't move the windows around or do anything else without using the upper navigation.

I've had the problem a number of times and it seems to be solved by restarting my computer. The reason I'm asking is because I hate restarting my computer every time it happens.

I don't know what causes it other than that it seems to happen after I launch certain programs/services. For instance, this last time it did it when I launched an executable inside of Wine. I'd really just like a quick fix for this problem.

Do you know which other programs/services cause this problem? Does the same thing happen every time with wine? Can the problem be solved by restarting your desktop environment/manager (what are you using?) rather than restarting your computer? What do you mean by a quick fix? I think we are all looking for one of those ...

lol Yeah, aren't we. Well thanks for the reply esteeven. As far as other programs causing this there are a few but I can only remember Wine and Scribus. Sorry I can't really remember the others because before I wrote it off as no big deal. I use GNOME as my desktop environment, and haven't even considered KDE. I didn't know that restarting my desktop environment itself was possible, a quick step by step on that would get you an answer.

As far as my "quick fix", I mean any means of fixing this as it happens without restarting my computer each time. I'm hoping maybe it just corrupts a process or something that I can restart in terminal. Fixing it permanently would be ideal, but if it is indeed an interruption caused by third party programs, then most likely that is out of the question. I'm currently not at my office (where the Fedora PC is) but when it happens again I'll post a link to a screenshot, or try.

Are you running beryl w/ emerald? Whenever it's happened on any of my systems it was because emerald crashed.

As a quick fix, try doing a ctl-alt-backspace to restart the X-server to see if that gets everything back (although you'll have to re login)

I'm using whatever Fedora's default window manager is. If that is Beryl, then so be it. I didn't download or yum Beryl if that is what you mean. So as far as I know, that isn't the problem. I'll mess around with it at work tomorrow and see what happens.

Ouch, sorry to double post. Alright, I've taken a screenshot of exactly what I mean. Also, that ctrl+alt+backspace thing seemed to do the trick. So now I have a quicker solution, but could we get down to the problem please?

You don't need to install Beryl. When you install fedora, it already comes with a 3D desktop manager; I think it's Compiz, if I'm not mistaken. Did you activate the "Desktop Effects"? It happens to me too, but fortunately, not often. I too do ctrl-alt-backspace when it happens.

Yes, I did install the desktop effects. Now that you mention it, I don't recall it happening before I did. If there is no fix for this as of yet, then I guess I'll just deal with it. Thanks everyone.

Did you disable the desktop effects or are you choosing to leave them enabled and deal with the problem?

Hi everyone.

I have the same problem. Every time I log in the upper part of all windows is missing (and hence you can't move them) My quick fix is to go to the System/preferences/Look and feel menu and disable/enable the desktop effects. I have beryl operating and would REALLY like to get this annoying bug fixed since the basic desktop effects doesn't have all the cool but also very helpful effects of beryl (like magic corners).

I do also have wine installed... I'll look into what happens if that is removed.

Let's figgure this one out!
