Too Many Processes
Hello all expert Linux administrator, i have a noob question about process.
My computer has many processes running which shown by top. Sometime, the total of processes can go to 400-420. Therefore, this make my pc pretty slow. If you need more infomartion, please let me know. Thanks for your help. Your help is greatly appreciated by me and others. |
That's very strange...you should have around 100 process if you have a graphical enviroment and some services. Maybe post the output of:
Code:
ps aux |
I will do this later.
|
This is all the process when issues ps aux.
What the difference ps -aux and ps aux ? Quote:
How to find all these cron job ? I also look at crontab but not found. Thanks for your help. Your help is greatly appreciated by me and others. |
I found out the cron.daily which have many process in one time.
|
In the list you have posted there are about 100 processes not 500...
Maybe run the command when you have 500 processes to see if there are some problems.. |
I will do that this evening.

It would appear that you have Gnome and KDE running at the same time. I believe there is a distribution that does this (KDE is under virtual terminal 7, Gnome under 8 or vice versa), so try switching to the other terminal using ctrl-alt-F8 and see what happens.
|
I have typed Ctrl+ALt+F7 but this is a gnome session(current session).
The F8 is a blank screen with a cursor blinking at the top. I have disable(Comment out) the /etc/crontab but still will give me 400 process after 3pm. I cannot post the the result ps aux because is more than 2500 chracters. How to submit the text file ? I can find any button to attach file. Thanks. |
You will have to host the text on another site then and link to it here. I've come across several such services, but can't find one at the moment.
I think I been mistaken about KDE - although you have a number of kde programs running, they all seem to have spawned from running kdevelop. I see you have beagle running - this is an indexing program that may be causing some of your issues. |
This is a rather complex issue, I am looking forward to your answer, my PC always such a problem occur.
|
The OP seems to imply cron is the problem - try this to see if you can spot anything obvious:
"ps -e --sorted=command | less" Quote:
|
I have try the ps -e --sorted=command | less command but return unknown GNU options.
I have disable the anacron in any run level and enabled the cron in runlevel 5 only. I will check the result. |
